Summary: The present article analyzes how the Brazilian recession in 2014 affected internet access at home using annual data between 2012 and 2017 from a large scale, representative household survey by the Regional Center for Studies for the Development of the Information Society (Cetic). Pooled OLS and Probit regression models show that the Brazilian recession had a substantial negative impact on Internet access. We find that, on average, the demand for internet access at home decreased 8% due to the deteriorated economic situation. The data also reveal that regions in which internet access was more widespread suffered a higher percentage decline. Households with lower levels of income and schooling also experience a stronger negative impact on internet access rates due to the crisis.
