Summary: This work presents a composite formed by alumina and low density polyethylene for use in ballistic protections, mainly bulletproof vests. The material was manufactured with 70% by weight of alumina and 30% by weight of low density polyethylene and subjected to ballistic tests and physical and thermal characterizations. After the ballistic test the fractured surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that a 15 mm composite board was able to satisfactorily withstand the ballistic impacts of .22 LR projectiles. The composite showed low water absorption, endured high temperatures and demonstrated good thermal stability. However, despite increasing the flame propagation time of polyethylene, the addition of alumina was not able to confer flame self-extinguishing properties. It is concluded that the composite has a good performance for ballistic protections of projectiles .22 LR.
